for Tomo

Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly
And the dreams that you dare to, oh why, oh why can't I?
Well I see trees of green and red roses too,
I'll watch them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

Personality:

Friendly | Curious | Naïve | Fearful | Gluttonous | Optimistic |Trustworthy | Dependent | Unguarded | Intrusive | Dense | Childish
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Friendly:

________ like a friend; kind; helpful____________________________________________________________

Tomo is an uncharacteristically friendly Breiman, welcoming to outsiders and locals alike.  She is always willing to make a new friend (and she will consider you a friend, even if you've only known each other for a day!...or a few hours...).  Some may argue that she is too friendly for her own good.

Curious:
________eager to learn or know; inquisitive.______________________________________________________

There's always more to discover and see and Tomo wants to see it all.  So far she's only explored the caves near her home and the minds of foreigners that were unfortunate enough to get tangled up in her web of neverending questions.

Naïve:
________having or showing a lack of experience, judgment, or information______________________________

Despite being alive for 27 years, Tomo is surprisingly gullible and ignorant.  She's overly trusting (a strange quality for a Breiman) and probably shouldn't be trusted to conduct interactions with strangers, but she's got to learn somehow... right?

Fearful:
________feeling fear, dread, apprehension, or solicitude______________________________________________

Danger could be hidden around each and every corner in this world, so it's important to have a buddy and a safety net or two included in your plan.  Even with said companion and safety net, that doesn't quell the constant worry that whittles at Tomo's nerves during each adventure.  Hopefully the payoff is worth the anxiety and something wonderful is discovered in return.

Gluttonous:
________tending to eat and drink excessively; voracious______________________________________________

Food, glorious food! If you have leftovers you don't want, Tomo is guaranteed to clean off your plate.  She doesn't mind the weight she gains from her excessive eating, but her borderline addictive behavior is quite concerning and looked down upon by her fellow Breim locals.

Optimistic:
________disposed to take a favorable view of events or conditions and to expect the most favorable outcome_____

It takes a lot to dampen Tomo's mood and even still, one would be hard pressed to stop her from finding the silver lining in the situation.  She doesn't understand (or really cannot comprehend) why you would waste energy wallowing in sadness.  There's a new, bright day on the horizon!  Don't let the woes of life and mortality keep you down!

Trustworthy:
________deserving of trust or confidence; dependable; reliable:_________________________________________

A worthy confidant, Tomo is guaranteed to guard your secrets with her life.  Furthermore, if you ask her a favor or to complete a task for you, she is guaranteed to get it done or at least try her very hardest.

Dependent:
________relying on someone or something else for aid, support, etc._____________________________________

As exciting and wonderful new things can be, they're simultaneously terrifying.  It's much more preferable to have someone to rely on that provides a safety net when you need it.  Why do something alone when you can do it while holding someone's hand?

Unguarded:
_______without a safeguard, as a cover, barrier, or shield, for protection__________________________________

Tomo doesn't really have a concept of hiding information.  Perhaps originating from her Seroran roots, she is extremely open about all things regarding herself.  Honesty is key and lying just leads to trouble, so why hide anything.

Intrusive:
_______tending or apt to intrude; coming without invitation or welcome___________________________________

Tomo isn't the best and understanding personal and social barriers.  Why are somethings inappropriate to ask?  Why is it bad to be curious?

Dense:
_______stupid; slow-witted; dull__________________________________________________________________

While most people who know Tomo wouldn't describe her as stupid, they wouldn't describe her as smart either.  The information is all there in that brain of hers, but she seems to have trouble putting one and two together.  That doesn't mean she won't listen to and enjoy your explanations though!  There may be an underlying ability to be an intellectual hidden deep within this unicorn, but she currently doesn't seem to have the capability to unlock this level of intelligence.

Childish:
_______of, like, or befitting a child_________________________________________________________________

Tomo is the child that never quite grew up.  She's still mesmerized by most things in Hireath, even those most consider exceptionally common.  However, she's not immature or unable to handle responsibility per say, she's simply more preoccupied with enjoying herself and the world around her.

Likes:

Food | Security | New Things, People, and Places | Festivals | Learning | Exploring | Taking Walks | Food! | Adventure (as long as it’s safe …)

Dislikes:

Uncertainty | Ignacio (sees him like a boogieman??) | Commotion | Being Hungry | Lack of Safety Net | Being Alone | How unwelcoming most Breimans are | Danger

History:

    Pre-Birth:

A filly was born in the land of Sedo and her name was Nassim.  She joined the nomads as they settled to prepare the land for planting.  Her parents were grateful that their child could run and strengthen her legs before wandering the desert with them.  The harvest came and went and the nomads ventured back into the desert with their bounty and new youngling in tow.  Life was sweet and wonderful in the desert heat until briefly after the child's sixth harvest.  Twins were born, one with seered eyes and wrapped with pink skin.   The sun that warmed the backs and souls of the Serorans scorched the young child.  The sickened child was dubbed Asra, observing her aversion to the bright of day, and her brother was named Riad.  Confusion and fear gripped the hearts of the families.  How could such a horse live in Alya's blessed land?  The answer was known before any would dare to speak it; she couldn't.  Soon, with sadness, the small family departed from their companions and began a journey for the sake of their newest child.  They would forfeit the sun in order for their baby to live fully.  They would migrate to Breim.

Cautious Breim tentatively received the small family, sympathetic for the sun-plagued child.  Shunned and excluded, the family was saddened by their loneliness, but hopeful as their second child's health finally blossomed.  Nassim had loved her siblings since their debut. Love still swelled in her heart for Asra, even though her sister was the reason that the sun no longer kissed their skin, the reason they were in a foreign land where no one would speak to them, a land where the inhabitants warily pretended they did not exist.  Life was somber as they settled in Northwestern Nariah, her parents struggled to find a way to support themselves and the children began their Breiman educations.  Days were slow and hard to tell apart without the passing sun, but they haltingly adjusted.

It was Ryouta that spoke first.  Living near the immigrants, he often saw Nassim and the twins during their quiet walk to school.  He was discouraged from approaching them by his Old Generation mining family, but he could not dampen his curiosity.  Taking interest in the strangers, he began walking with them to their schooling.  Friendly Ryouta was the key that unlocked the family's social life in Breim.  Through him, the children were able to make friends in school and by befriending his parents, the Seroran adults were able to create social bonds and connections.  Nassim and Ryouta grew close and were eventually inseparable.

Ryouta was 17 when he asked for Nassim's hoof in marriage.  She joyfully accepted, her family equally delighted.  They were joined in a mixed wedding that boasted features of an Old Generation wedding as well as qualities of a Seroran celebration.  Blessed by a priest of Argus and Alya, they began their lives together. Nassim helped Ryouta in continuing the family business of mining and selling extracted raw resources and gems.  They foaled a single child soon after their wedding, pure white and weak.  A day was all they had with the child before a cryptic sickness whisked her away and with the extinguished life, Nassim fell into depression.  Realizing the similarity between her sun sickened sister and her late, pale newborn, she worried that she was cursed to birth plagued children more ailing and frail that Asra.  Ryouta failed to reassure his lover and they did not try again for foals until years later.

Tomomi was the second to crown into their humble home, minutes after her brother.  The foals curled into each other as they were licked clean by mother and father alike, Red mottled coat mingled with pure white.  They were together for three days before the colt passed.

    Childhood:

Tomo was always a happy child.  She enjoyed school and gobbled up knowledge as eagerly as she devoured food, though she only received average marks.  In her early years, her mother was loving, but prone to bouts of depression.  Ever grateful that the gods blessed Tomo with good health, she was at the same time distraught that she lost a second child.  It was Tomo that often coaxed her mother from her sullen spells, it was difficult not to succumb to the filly's unyielding optimism.  When at home, she usually assisted her parents with the family business and so became quite learned on gems and other earthly materials.

The young unicorn was often teased at school for her plump figure, but was blissfully perplexed as to why her extra weight was an issue. Adults quietly theorized that the filly gained so much weight because her mother was grieving for her lost children by over nourishing Tomo.  This, of course, was not true.  Tomo simply had quite a voracious appetite and still does, she loved food was all.  Later, since criticizing her weight clearly had no effect on the foal's psyche, harriers focused on her Seroran heritage and the mismatched horns that began to sprout from Tomo's face.  Again, she was unphased.  Through her oblivious and optimistic nature, she remained friendly with all of her peers, including those that bullied her.  She was gifted a younger brother at the age of four.  Once again the colt was the only survivor of a pair of twins, his counterpart pale and quick to fail in health.  Unlike Tomo, Gorou was a quiet child that kept to himself.  He was sensitive to other's opinions and criticisms and found school to be quite difficult because of his anxieties.  Tomo helped him through his schooling with positive reinforcement and constant companionship.  Even after her graduation, she would accompany him to school on days he found to be particularly challenging.  After Gorou, Nassim didn't think she could handle foaling any more children because of the high chance that one or both foals would die.  Watching Tomo and Gorou prosper held her depression at bay.

After Tomo graduated her basic learning, she was mostly found assisting in her parents' shop.  By the this time, she was quite a knowledgeable employee.  She cataloged stock, helped to arrange bulk deliveries, and recommended gems and materials for makers to use in their projects.  Because she was no longer in school, she was able to accompany her father more often when he made bulk deliveries to Sterling where materials would be processed and traded to other herds.  She loved these trips.  The young unicorn had always been an adventurer, but she was fearful to venture too far from what she knew.  During these travels, Tomo was able to see horses from foreign and far off lands, taking in and admiring their strange dress and customs.  She desired so badly to see these places and the world outside the Labyrinth, but fear kept her within reach of her family.  Often she would find some foreign stranger and pester them with questions about the outside world until they either figured out a way to ditch her or her father dragged her away, apologizing for her bothering the outsider. Her mother was often subject to Tomos insatiable curiosity and questions.  Tomo is fairly well versed in Seroran culture and stories, because her mother and grandparents were so willing to educate her on her desert heritage.  At first her mother was worried this knowledge would prove disadvantageous to the young filly, possibly alienating her from her Breiman peers, but Tomo could not be persuaded and eventually Nassim embraced her eagerness for information on the sun baked land of Sedo.

No longer preoccupied with school, the tween had enough extra time on her hooves to explore the caverns of Sirith.  She was fairly familiar with main mining caves, having accompanied and assisted her parents many times in scouting out and collecting materials, but she knew little of the caves off the beaten path.  Engulfed by wanderlust and armed with the desire to know and see , she set out to explore the caves of her homeland.  Although, she did this at a very ... very slow pace.  The unicorn was frightened of becoming lost in the Labyrinth and so made sure to only explore a small section of new territory at a time.  Often, she would drag Gorou or some friends along with her.  She said it was for the company, but most everyone knew it was because she was too nervous to go alone.  Normally, Tomo wasn't (and still isn't) much of a rule breaker, but her fascination with discovering new things and places had overridden her law abiding tendencies, inducing her underage wandering.  Always making sure to tell her parents where she was going and which direction she planned to explore, Tomo constantly had a safety net in case she did become misplaced within the great expanse of the Labyrinth.  Thankfully, she never became lost, or else the experience may have managed to snuff out her quench for adventure forever.

In her twelfth year, the twins were born.  Akiko and Takara were unplanned, but considered blessings none the less.  Being the first pair of twins to pass through her mother's womb and both survive, they were greatly celebrated within the family.  Nassim saw them as a blessing from Alya, two healthy foals as holy retribution for all the children she lost.  The twins grew as almost one unit and were often referred to as a single entity. They saw no problem in this.

    Teen - Adulthood:

Life was fairly uneventful for Tomo in the years spanning her early teens and adulthood.  She continued to explore the caves near her home in Northwestern Nariah (often accompanied by Gorou) and is quite well versed in their layout now, she could easily make a career of being a guide if she so desired.  Instead, she continues to work with her parents in the mining business.  She now takes main responsibility for the bulk deliveries to Sterling, her sisters often accompany her to see what New Generation ideas are brewing in the progressive city.  She has occasionally hiked to one of the entrances of Breim, but has never stepped hoof outside the protections of the caves.  Once in a while she runs back into the depths of the caves with tears streaming, caused by the sheer stress and apprehension of possibly venturing from the safety of Breiman caverns. Quite a curious scene to witness by the rare passerby.

    Current:

Tomo is becoming more and more restless about leaving Breim and exploring the outside world as years go by.  She plots and ponders on how she would go about this (frequently using Gorou or the twins as sounding boards for her ideas), though she hasn't made any solid preparations.  Simultaneously excited and terrified at the prospect of leaving, it may still be a while before she leaves the safety of Breim.

Excited by temporary Seroran settlement in Ueno, Tomo and her family sometimes take miniature vacations to volunteer in the Seroran camp and rekindle their personal relationships with their distant desert family.  Usually about half of the family stays behind during these endeavors.  Tomo is personally elated about the announcement of the new Consul position.  Never before having a career aspiration, she now is considering the position as a potential career path.

Notes:

    -        She is aligned more with the New Generation, but considers herself in the middle.

    -       Usually snores lightly, sometimes heavily.

    -        Fantastic whistler, but rarely utilizes this.  Usually takes a few tries to start whistling since she’s not practiced, but is VERY loud once she gets in the groove.

    -       Is very excited about the temporary Serorans in Breim!

    -        Ecstatic about the new Consul rank and aspires to one day be a Consul.  (Will she ever reach the required level of maturity?? Who knows????)

    -        Her siblings and her were named with more traditional Breiman names than Seroran names as to make sure they were less likely to face discrimination.

    -        Her dead siblings were victims to LWS.

    -        Twins run on her mother's side.

    -        She is very close to her immediate and extended family.

    -        Akiko and Takara are often just refered to as "the twins".

    -        Her family often has large family dinners at their house or at either grandparents' houses.

    -        Loves festivals for all their aspects, but the food is definitely her favorite.

    -        Though young, her sisters are developing and refining horn carving techniques.  Their work is still very exploratory, but are already gaining a small following.

    -        Quietest of the siblings, Gorou is closest to Tomo.  This may be because she was always there for him while he was younger and was his only sibling for a long time, but Tomo is often the first and frequently only person he feels comfortable confiding in.

    -        She is familiar with ,and is often quite well known in, some of the best eateries in Nariah.  She also could point you in the direction of some great restaurants and stands in Sterling as well.

    -        She has explored the caves near her home in Northwestern Nariah and is comfortably familiar with their layout.  She also has minimally explored caves between Nariah and Sterling as well as caves along main mining routes.
