Personality

Blunt | Reserved | Dutiful | Authoritative | Astute | Intense | Steadfast | Righteous

A mare that is carefully selective with her words, Froya prefers to be efficient and direct rather than milling about issues.  Blunt, but never intentionally venomous, Froya speaks honestly on principle and can be counted on to provide a thorough and sometimes harsh assessment of persons and situations. Reserved, but not guarded, Froya is unlikely to share personal details about her own private life and history unless prompted. She will, however, take interest in personal information willingly given by others and can be relied on to remember those details accurately.  While her peers may have uncovered little in regards to the Valkyrie’s past and personal affairs, they may be consistently surprised to learn how much Froya knows and remembers about them.

Orderly and well composed, she fulfills her responsibilities dutifully in a timely and effective manner and expects those around her to do the same.  Patient, but not permissive, Froya works well with old and new recruits and views it as her personal responsibility to help cultivate her peers into respectable and capable soldiers.  Cool and collected, Froya walks with confidence and an undeniably authoritative air.  Commanding respect from peers and strangers alike, she falls naturally into a leadership role and is prone to assuming control when she finds command to be lacking.  Intolerant to tomfoolery during patrols and training, Froya has no qualms about sternly putting a fellow Forged into place when she finds their behavior inappropriate.

Froya is an astute warrior who is observant and quick witted, able to hastily formulate plans and adjust to rapidly changing situations.  While consistently conscious of her surroundings, Froya is pensive and calculating and can be found to be rather intense and intimidating by those around her.  All her actions are weighted with a certain seriousness and purpose, leaving little room for humor or friendly banter.  Steadfast in her dedications and values, she is strictly loyal to Hira, morality, and Kaia, doing her best to ensure these drivers are balanced and working in harmony whenever possible.  Righteous and justice oriented, it is not beyond her to occasionally bend protocol in favor of a more morally sound alternative.  A ardent follower of Kaia’s way, she is a firm believer in the importance of independent thinking and judgement, but remains committed to law, order, and creed in order to maintain peace and security for the greater good. She views questioning and doubt of accepted laws, standards, protocols, etc. to be healthy and necessary to maintaining a progressive social order as long as it doesn’t devolve into mutiny (unless, of course, under the rule of a truly tyrannical and criminal leader).

History

TLDR; Gegnir was a shield to Garok during the war, afterwards he connected to a herding clan during an assignment.  Once his assignment was finished he stayed and married one of the herders (Deodora), Froya was born.  She was trained as a herder and warrior, becoming closely intimate with Kaia's wilds as well as the way of battle.  Taking on a snow leopard when she was 16 in order to defend her family flock, Froya took a great injury to the neck that left her scared for life.  The experience proved her valor, however, and she appealed to become Hira's apprentice.  Hira accepted the filly as her trainee and Froya has remained loyally by her side ever since, watching and assisting in the rise of the Valkyrie rank.

Pre-Birth:

Gegnir joined the Stonehoof uprising when he was 15. He trained under their regime, survived their battles, and grew to be a valuable stallion among the hoard, wise with tactics and efficient at subduing or dispatching opponents. By the time the war was over he had risen to Garok's inner protective circle, holding the rank of shield for years.

After victory, Garok dispatched Gegnir to access damages sustained through the long war and hopefully kindle trust between the clans and their new War Lord.  During these travels across vast Onea, Gegnir found himself caught in the beginnings of a storm while on the mountainside.  Stumbling upon a flock of apana in the snowfall, the battle-worn stallion searched for their shepherds to ride out the storm in their company.

Finding himself enchanted by the herders who sheltered him, Gegnir did not immediately depart when the storm cleared.  He discovered the herders displayed resilience and strength, wisdom and patience.  These highlanders felt Forged to the bone, but lacked the blood thirst and aggression of many of his peers. In the herding clan, mares and stallions were nearly indistinguishable in their duties.  Both were trusted with dangerous or complex tasks, with the same expectations.  The mares did not falter and they were not incompetent in method or execution. Among them, he felt closer to Kaia, but these horses stirred something else in him, something he had pushed to dormancy deep within him.

Doubt.

Gegnir soon left the herding clan to continue his mission from Garok, but he viewed the Forged he met differently after that visit.  He saw then that mares were not born lesser, but that they were made that way by their fathers, brothers, and husbands.  With new perspective, the shield saw strength in all the fillies and mares he came across while fulfilling his assignment.  It may have been smothered and suppressed, but it was there. Anger had begun to fester in him for being blind to his own prejudice and the mistreatment half of his people were expected to endure. He thought of Bahar (Bruk's battering ram), he though of Hetta (Garok's lioness), and even of young Hira ... the War Lord's daughter. They were seen has strengths to be held by stallions, not as strengths of their own. Frequently he would visit and stay with the herders when he traveled through their territory and leaving them became harder each time.  He had grown close to them and their ways, soothed by the bubble of equality they provided.  Among the herders, he found peace and new beginnings.

Gegnir returned to Garok to give his final report on his assignment, as well as news of his resignation.  He explained to the stallion what he had learned and seen, how his opinions had changed, how he could no longer stand among his brothers-in-arms if they continued to exclude mares ... his reputation was shattered by the proclamations.  Horses who had seen his prowess in battle, watched him prove his worth again and again, turned their backs to him and said he had gone soft. It had stung, to be abandoned by those he was battle-bonded with, but he had expected no less. He returned to his new clan and married the mare he had grown to love through his visits and admired as an equal, Deodora.  Granted a foal by the circle, Froya arrived in the summer of 1669.

Childhood-Teenage Years:

Froya was a filly who was always too serious for her own well being and was determined to be the best.  Raised by a clan who was nearly untouched by the sexist norms of the Forged and a father and mother who instilled a sense of justice deep within her, Froya grew into an opinionated foal who saw her clan's lifestyle and values as vastly superior. Enamored by both the martial skill of her father and the steady resilience of her mother, Froya committed herself fully to being the best and bravest warrior-herder she could be. Gegnir found that his daughter had a natural affinity for war-skills, but also did not neglect to practice what did not come instinctively.  Being reared on the mountainside left Froya nimble and surefooted, something that translated well to battle training.

While she progressed steadily in her fathers lessons and in the ways of her clan, Froya was growing increasingly frustrated with the state of her herd's society.  As she held onto her anger, it began to fester into a plethora of negative emotions.  Distaste for raiders and shields grew to full fledged hate.  Jealousy erupted from within her the first time she saw a pegasus fly, eating at her until she became bitter towards the Goddess and all of her species.  Concerned for her child who was becoming increasingly distraught and resentful, Deodora began to tutor Froya in methods of calming your mind.  Coached by her mother and clan in breathing exercises and quiet self-reflection, the young filly was beginning to curb her emotional flare ups. Deodora and her clan also taught the foal how to read the skies and how to be diligent and aware of not only the flock, but of all of the surrounding life.  To some the mountain may seem desolate and silent, but a trained horse can hear it's whispers of knowledge and see it's life. With her mother's training and the firm, but serene presence of Kaia in her mountain home Froya was on her way to becoming a well-rounded forged.

In her 9th year came a cause for celebration.  Hira, daughter of Garok, had returned from her travels and had assumed the position of War Lord.  A mare had proven her strength and had given strength to all the mares in Onea.  Gegnir and Deodora became even more confident that Froya would be as successful as she wanted to be.  The young filly admired Hira and began to pressure her father into training her more than normal.  Froya wanted to serve the War Lord Mare, fighting along side her for her land, people, and to bury the sexism of the War Forged under their fierce hooves.

Teenage Years-Young Adult:

Froya had stabilized significantly by the time she reached her teens, but still was distrustful of Raiders and Shields.  While not outright rude or cruel to pegasi, the mare was not able to fully control her jealousy and so tended to avoid Alya's children.  Overall, however, she operated with a cool head and was quick in analyzing what was needed in situations.

In the beginnings of her 16th winter, Froya had been posted a guard over the clan's flock of apana.  The night had been so far pleasant and uneventful, until a shape detached itself from the rocky outcrops and began slinking towards the flock.  Immediately Froya raised the alarm and her fellow clan members began to rouse, but not fast enough to deal with the intruder at hand. Rushing forward, Froya took on the snow leopard alone in order to protect her family's livelihood, it's coat thick for winter bristled as it spun to face her.  Springing, it latched itself to her as she reared, crying out again.

Claws tore her skin as the predator struggled to hold on to her bucking muscular form.  Clan mates had reached the flock and were shepherding the precious apanas away. Gegnir and another clan member were rushing to assist Froya, but did not reach her before the leopard sunk it's teeth into her neck.  Her head clouded with determination and adrenaline, Froya did not feel the wound and continued to fight.  Not a moment later the cat was thrown from her back, a chunk of her neck with it.  Knowing it's defeat, the animal fled as soon as it thudded to the ground.

With her clan around her Froya swelled with pride, but also with pain.  Most of her wounds were minor, but the gash in her neck would need quite a bit of attention.  The wound gave her no trouble during it's recovery, save for the frustration of not being able to help her clan as much as she would have liked.  At the end of her recovery, however, Gegnir surprised her with a trip to Skeldr town to appeal to Hira to become her apprentice.

Impressed by the filly's discipline, skill, and spirit, Hira took her on.

Young Adult-Current:

Under the watch of her mentor, Froya was able to gain a full grasp on controlling her emotions (no longer stirred into a quiet rage by Raiders and Shields or consumed by jealous pining over a pegasus' flight) and blossomed into an impressive tactician and warrior.  Though loyal to her mentor nearly to a fault, Froya had developed a strong bond with Hira and was able to voice her opinions (opposing or not) to the War Lord without fear of being shunned.

Having been training under Hira since before the creation of the Valkyrie rank, Froya has seen many fillies and mares come and go, rise to their call or crumble under the pressure.  She dedicates a great deal of her time helping to train the younger Valkyries and is an ever-present and senior force her shield-sisters can turn to.

Notes:

-Calling Herders soft, weak, or dissing them in general will ignite her pride and anger
-She's fairly good as passing off sexist remarks as stupid, but enough prodding will spark her temper
-She has amended her anger with Alya.
-She would attempt the challenging climb to visit the shrines of Kaia and Alya whenever her clan would rest near Mt. Skeldr.  She has successfully made the climb twice.
-Against the culling of petty criminals and other minor offenders as slaves to Aodh, believes they should be able to work on their debt to the Forged on Onean soil and be re-integrated into the society afterwards. (ie; chain gangs to help maintain and improve bridges, War Lord's road, etc.)
